Is she not the cutest old lady you've ever seen? This is Aunt Dot, (my great aunt, but more like my grandma). Isn't she precious?
Precious is an understatement for this woman. She's a gem. She is my mom's mom's older sister. Back in her day she was an elementary school secretary. She was also an opera singer and pianist/organist. She always threw the best family parties and would go all out on the food and decor, making it look superb.
One time at a family birthday party, there were so many people there (so she thought, I guess). So worrying about not having enough to go around, she cut the sheet cake into very tiny pieces. We ended up having tons of cake left over. To this day we still joke about that, and when someone wants a smaller piece of cake- we say we'd like an "Aunt Dot sized piece".
Aunt Dot will be 89 this year. She is unstoppable. She did water aerobics at the YMCA until just a few years ago. She's been a widow for a couple of years now. She doesn't remember who we are when we visit, but is heart-broken when we leave. I love this woman and am grateful for her sweet spirit and wonderful example. She filled in as our grandma when my Grandma passed away 13 years ago, and she will always be a grandma to me. I hope she doesn't have to stay here on earth too much longer, and will be able to soon reunite with her sweetheart, sister and parents.
